All this fuss about a shoemaker and a lonely old seaman...I just don’t understand how such a small town can be affected by two people - especially since one’s never been seen and the other’s vanished.

That's Ernie's Niece, Nancy. She's been acting landlord while he's away.
RAY:
Nancy, huh? I wonder if she can help clear up some questions …

You best be careful detective, she's not the kind of girl to give straight answers to any Tom, Dick or Harry...a person like you...really has no chance --

RAY:
Hey, you questioning my authority?
